• Kula talks SWD mission, veterans to North Texas Commission

    SWD Commander, Brig. Gen. Tom Kula addressed members of the North Texas Commission at a luncheon Aug. 15, to discuss the Corps mission and emphasized the importance of supporting veterans and wounded warriors. Kula provided the crowd of business owners, community members, entrepreneurs, veterans and military members with a short briefing about SWD, its mission and priorities followed by a sit down Q&A session hosted by former Dallas County Commissioner, Maurine Dickey. Dickey asked Kula questions about the Corps role in the drought, the importance of hiring veterans and the significance in promoting science, technology, engineering and math skills in middle school through college age students. The North Texas Commission is a not-for-profit organization that brings together businesses, government entities and higher education institutions to enhance the economic vitality of North Texas

  • SWD conducts Hurricane Exercise

    DALLAS—The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division, joined by Corps Headquarters personnel, State of Texas officials, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other federal agencies, held a hurricane “table top” exercise today to help prepare for response in the event of a hurricane making landfall along the Texas Coast.
  • Pratt assumes command of Corps' Tulsa District

    Col. Richard A. Pratt assumed command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, after a ceremony at the Armed Forces Reserve Center, Friday, July 12. In the tradition-filled change of command ceremony, Col. Pratt assumed command of the Tulsa District from Col. Michael J. Teague, who has been the district commander for the past three years and retired after 28 years in the Army.

    GALVESTON, Texas (July 9, 2013) – Col. Christopher W. Sallese passed the command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District to Col. Richard P. Pannell during a change of command ceremony today at the USACE Galveston District’s Jadwin Building in Galveston, Texas. Southwestern Division Commander Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Kula presided over the ceremony.

    Officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Southwestern Division met with representatives from Texas Ports and the Texas Department of Transportation in Galveston, Texas, June 20, to identify current areas of need and discuss opportunities to improve the infrastructure that supports the Texas Coast and its immense economic impact on both Texas and the Nation. The meeting, held in conjunction with the Texas Water Conservation Association’s mid-year conference in Galveston, provided an opportunity for Corps and state officials to look at current ways of doing business as well as identify means to improve customer relationships and support.
  • Water Management: Corps’ Southwestern Division partners to build a resilient, reliable water resources portfolio

    The cycles of drought and flooding that have defined Texas and much of the southwest over the years have presented many challenges in water management, all intensified by the large gains in population and industry that the area has seen. With 28 reservoirs in Texas with storage set aside for water supply, and 74 multipurpose water reservoirs within the region, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Southwestern Division has been in the forefront, working with state and local governments and other stakeholders to ensure they are able to meet the water needs of the area. SWD participated in the Texas Water Conservation Organization’s Mid-Year Conference in Galveston, Texas, June 19-21 to discuss its role in water management and efforts to build a resilient and reliable portfolio that meets the current and future water resources needs for the region.
