Colonel George H. Walter is the Commander and Division Engineer of the Southwestern Division (SWD), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Division, which is headquartered in Dallas, is one of nine Corps of Engineers regional commands. With four District Offices in Fort Worth and Galveston, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Little Rock, Arkansas, it encompasses all or part of six states, and covers more than 2.3 million acres of public land and water. As the SWD Commander and Division Engineer, Walter oversees hundreds of water resources development and military design and construction projects that bring value to our communities, our Nation and our warfighters.


Prior to taking command of the Southwestern Division, Walter served as Plans Division Chief in the Operations Directorate of HQDA G-9. Walter’s previous assignments include serving as the Assistant Chief of Staff, Operations, for the XVIII Airborne Corps. Additionally, he served as a Lieutenant in the 82d Airborne Division, Company Commander in 173d Airborne Brigade, S3/XO in the 82d Airborne Division, Battalion Command with 6BEB in 4-25 IBCT (ABN), and Brigade Command in 20th Engineer Brigade.


Walter had broadening assignments with 7th Army Training Command, Aide-de-Camp at the Southern European Task Force, Active Component/Reserve Component Team Chief in 1st Army, observer/controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center and later LNO to FORSCOM, Chief of Staff for the US European Command Logistics Directorate (J4), Executive Officer to the EUCOM Deputy Commander and as both Division and Corps Level Command Engineers.


Walter is a graduate of the Engineer Basic Course, Infantry Captains Career Course, and the US Army War College. In addition to a Master of Strategic Studies from Carlisle, he also has a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. He received his Commission into the Corps of Engineers after graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1996.


A Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Service Chiefs’ Fellow and Project Management Professional, Walter has operational and combat experience in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. His awards and decorations include the Ranger Tab, Combat Action Badge, and Master Parachutist Badge with bronze service star.
