DALLAS- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Southwestern Division’s Regional Logistics Manager, Ron Richards, has been named USACE 2012 Meritorious Logistician of the Year.

Richards beat out more than 500 eligible logisticians from across the Corps to win the prestigious award.

“I am blessed with a team of analytical, honest spoken and dedicated team members who willfully go ‘out of the box’ in order to achieve greatness, said Richards. “I accept this award on their behalf.”

As the Regional Logistics Manager for SWD, Richards is charged with maintaining 100 percent property accountability throughout the Division, managing the Division’s vehicle fleet and keeping the Division’s operating costs and environmental footprint low. He manages a team of 26 logisticians spanning across the SWD headquarters in Dallas, and all four SWD Districts located in Tulsa, Okla., Galveston and Fort Worth, Texas, and Little Rock, Ark.

“Ron Richards is an exceptional logistician and superb leader that set the example for others to follow,” said Jeffrey B. Burbach Directorate of Logistics, Headquarters, USACE. “His tenacity and perseverance to intricately plan and optimally execute logistics solutions for SWD's geographically dispersed and complex mission set is second to none.”

During fiscal year 2012, Richards and his team saved the government an estimated $7.7 million and 108 trees by recycling metal frames, motors, scrap metal and shredded paper and by accounting for more than $3.38 million in unaccounted property. His team also donated more than 945 computers and printers to schools, civil groups, and Native Americans at an estimated savings of $945,000 to those organizations. Additionally, under Richard’s leadership, SWD logisticians supported overseas contingency operations and support to USACE and the Nation during Hurricane Sandy and Oklahoma tornadoes.

“Ron is a dedicated and valuable asset to the Southwestern Division family,” said Brig. Gen. Thomas Kula, commander, SWD. “As the Corps is looking at ways to find efficiencies and optimize processes, Ron took on the mission head-on.  He and his team have saved our organization millions of dollars and that is invaluable.”
