• Corps of Engineers teams up with Bass Pro Shops for 2013 Water Safety projects

    DALLAS - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bass Pro Shops are kicking off the 2013 water recreation season with plans for new joint projects to help spread the word on water and boating safety, as well as environmental protection. The two organizations signed a partnership agreement late last year to develop potential projects that can be accomplished in the near term and in the future, such as those that improve fish habitat and focus on water and boater safety education. They are now ready to implement new measures to make the agreement a reality.

  • Our Wounded Warriors: Once a Soldier, a Soldier for Life

Kula Commander Southwestern Division U.S. Army Corps of Engineers DALLAS--The U.S. Army, which I have proudly served in for more than 30 years, has a saying: “Once a Soldier, a Soldier for Life.” This concept is shared across all our military services. Those who have served, whether a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine, will always be part of that great community of men and women who have put on a uniform and served this Nation. On a broader scale, our soldiers are also part of the noble American tradition of citizen soldiers who embody the will of the people directly because they are the people. Americans who serve in our military come from our local communities and return to their families in these local communities when their service has ended. Sadly, because of the nature of war, some return injured. We call these our Wounded Warriors, and to these all Americans owe a special debt of gratitude—though, when you meet a Wounded Warrior, you will see that gratitude is not what they seek. They seek new beginnings and opportunities to transition to a productive and fulfilling civilian life.

    By Sara Goodeyon Tulsa District Public Affairs WICHITA, Kan. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division water safety team held its division-wide water safety event as part of the Wings over McConnell 2012 Open House and Air Show Sept. 29 and 30 at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kan. More than two dozen team members from the division and its four districts (Tulsa, Little Rock, Galveston and Fort Worth), as well as the the Kansas City District and the National Water Safety Team staffed a 150-foot-by-100-foot area during the two-day event visited by more than 100,000 military members and their dependents who attended the Open House and Air Show.

As part of the federal government’s national response framework, the Corps of Engineers is the responsible agency for public works and engineering during times of national disaster and emergencies.

    By LaDonna Davis SWD Public Affairs DALLAS-- More than a hundred college, high school and middle school students hoping to gain better insight into their career possibilities met with employees from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division at the Women of Color career fair, part of the Women of Color annual conference Oct. 11-13, at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas The Women of Color career fair is held every year with a goal of engaging and educating students, particularly minorities, about career opportunities in the science, technology, engineering and math fields and providing outreach opportunities for government and non-government organizations and private companies .This year’s theme was “Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity.”

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division, through its Galveston District, is involved in virtually every mile of the 367-mile coastline, and plays an integral role in both the preservation of Nature’s treasures that are a living part of the Texas coastal region as well as serving and preserving the industries that fuel commerce and power our nation.
  • SWD logistics: Saving the command and government thousands of dollars

    by Ronald E Richards, SWD Regional Logistics Manager and David Cameron Miller, SWD Logistics Specialist DALLAS -- Southwestern Division logistics offices save the government big money by palletizing and recycling unused or excess equipment and donating surplus computers to local schools (SWD photos) In May 2011, the Southwestern Division Commander, Brig. Gen.Thomas Kula, tasked the Division Logistics Office with improving property accountability and reducing the environmental impact of Corps-related activities throughout SWD. To accomplish this task, Kula highlighted the need to achieve property accountability throughout the Division; reduce operating costs and environmental impacts associated with the current vehicle fleet; and improve the efficiency of Corps-owned facilities.
